who are they?
all vibes, no gender. Tkaronto based, Akan roots
Abi is a facilitator, multidisciplinary visual artist and movement storyteller. Their visual art and dance focuses conversation with kin of all realms and time, through code that extends our common spoken languages. Their intention is to balance expression through our understanding of generational trauma, with generational knowledge and play. They are deeply motivated and are driven by their ever evolving decolonial praxis - factoring in disability justice, reframing of ideals productivity and rest as part of the ‘work’.
Abi’s introduction to dance as part of their (more public facing) artistic practice began in 2019, after participating in ILLNANA’s Right to Dance Intensive, they came both into an intimate knowledge of themselves as a trans person and the euphoria of storytelling through dance. Since this discovery, they participated as an artist fellow with the Wildseed Centre for Arts and Activism to refine their values and approach as an artist. For the past few years, they have been performing burlesque (as Joe Peach) as well as contemporary works sharing stories of their ancestors as acts of veneration, love and joy. In addition to solo developed works, Abi has worked collaboratively with artists such as Ravyn Wngz and Camille Turner, both artists who are exploring Afrofuturism and reframing of Black narratives through storytelling.
